All 3412, 3508, 3512, 3516, D379, D398, D399 Generator EnginesReports show that the shackle assembly, which is used on SR4 Generators driven by the above engines, can wear during generator operation. See the illustration. Vibration can cause the shackle to wear against the stop. This can result in a notch in the shackle. It is also possible for the shackle to eventually move down and contact the exciter stator windings below it.
To prevent this wear, the shackle assemblies should be removed when the generators are put into operation. If there is a 1.5 mm (.06") or deeper notch in the shackles, they must not be used again. If the shackle assemblies are not damaged, they can be used again when it is necessary to move the generator.
Later generators now use two lifting brackets that are mounted on the outside of the generator. These brackets do not have to be removed.
