Large wheel loaders often work nonstop, rain or shine, and sometimes pit floors are wet and slippery just from ground water. Water is an excellent lubricant for cutting rubber. Wet pit floors and sharp rocks are a combination that can cause serious tire damage. Sometimes, when the going is tough, whether the pit is wet or dry, using enough power to dig will cause wheels to break traction and slip.Caterpillar developed the Variable Capacity Torque Converter, (V.C.T.C.) to give the operator a way to adjust the power to the wheels to match the traction available.The V.C.T.C.'s two-section torque converter impeller makes this possible. The inner section of the torque converter impeller operates full time. The outer section freewheels, pumping no oil until the outer impeller clutch is engaged. The pressure of the clutch is continuously variable. This clutch pressure adjusts outer impeller speed.Full engagement of the outer section - maximum torque.No engagement of the outer section - minimum torque.
