Machine Setup for Paving
1. Install Automatic Grade and Slope Controls (if desired).2. Align Machine. * Drive the paver into position to start paving. Adjust the steering guide to line up with the edge of the roadway, gradeline or whatever has been established as the edge for the mat.* If optional cut-off shoes are to be used for the first pass, place the shoes on the inside edge to provide a better finished outside edge. Before raising the screed to its travel position, unlock the cut-off shoe from the endplates to prevent them from coming in contact with the screw conveyor.3. The cut-off shoes are used when it is necessary to reduce the laying width between end plates. Choose the appropriate one as required for the job.4. End gates are provided for installation at each end of the screed to hold material within the laying width of the paver and to form the edges of the mat being laid. End gates are standard equipment and necessary except when bleeding out material to the side.5. Pre-heat the screed. See "Lighting the Burners".6. Set the crown. To provide a specific crown, the screed is adjusted to whatever amount is required. This can be quickly set without stopping the paver. See "Crown Adjustment".7. Set the mat thickness. Use two wooden blocks, approximately 20 to 25% thicker than the compacted mat required. Place the blocks under the screed near each end and the lower screed so the entire weight rests on the blocks. For example, if the mat is to be laid 50.8 mm (2 in) thick compacted, the blocks should be 63.50 mm (2.5 in) thick and about .7625 m (2.5 ft) long. The blocks should be placed lengthwise in the direction of travel. Blocks thicker than the finished compacted mat are required to allow for additional compaction by rollers following the paver. 8. The thickness controls increase or decrease depth or thickness of the material being laid.a. Turn the thickness controls to the null, (slack) position with the screed FLAT on the blocks. Recheck the control. The null position can be felt when turning the thickness controls with the screed resting on the blocks and needs to be checked 2 times per side. The controls will turn easily with no drag for approximately 1/2 turn when the null position has been reached. Recheck both sides to verify Null position. b. Turn the thickness control screws approximately 1 to 2 turns so the front edge of the screed is above the top of the wood blocks. As the screed slides off the blocks, it moves onto partially compacted material of the same depth as the block thickness.c. To increase the depth, turn the thickness controls to the right, (clockwise).d. To decrease the depth, turn the thickness controls to the left, (counterclockwise).e. Secure the control screws using the lock provided. For Thickness Setup Procedures involving the tractor, see the Operation Manual for the tractor. Feeder gates set too high. Feeder gates
