--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------Description of Change: A new exhaust valve seat insert is used in the 3600 Engines. The former insert could crack at the lower portion of the water cavity through to the inside diameter of the insert. This allowed jacket water to enter the cylinder. Also, corrosion of the insert and an incorrect assembly technique could cause additional failures.Adaptable To: The new 7E9641 Valve Seat Insert is a direct replacement for the 7E6555 and 4W0025 Valve Seat Insert. The former valve seat inserts are canceled. The following procedure is the correct procedure for installing inserts. Disregard the procedure in Guideline For Reusable Parts, "Procedures To Salvage Cylinder Head Assemblies For 3600 Family Of Engines", Form SEBF8129.
Installation Of Valve Seat Inserts
Make sure the counterbores for the valve seat inserts are clean before installing the inserts. Valve seat inserts can be installed using one of two methods. Prepare the standard and the water cooled inserts separately prior to installation.
Standard Inserts
1. Lower the temperature of the insert to -60°C (-76°F) or install at room temperature.2. When installing the insert, put clean engine oil on the outside diameter and the radius at the bottom of the insert.3a. Install the insert using 8T2674 Seat Driver (J) and a hammer. Install the insert to the bottom of the counterbore of the cylinder head casting. Excessive pounding of chilled inserts may cause the insert to "bounce" back off the counterbore or fracture the insert.3b. Install the insert using 8T2674 Seat Driver and a hydraulic press, tooling (K). Press the insert to the bottom of the counterbore in the cylinder head casting.Water Cooled Inserts
1. Install insert at room temperature.2. When installing the insert, apply 6V1541 Quick Cure Primer to the outside diameter. Then, apply 9S3265 Retaining Compound over the primer.3a. Install the insert using 8T2674 Seat Driver (J) and a hammer. Install the insert to the bottom of the counterbore in the cylinder head casting.3b. Install the insert using 8T2674 Seat Driver and a hydraulic press, tooling (K). Press the insert to the bottom of the counterbore in the cylinder head casting.
