Information:
This maintenance procedure is required for conventional coolants such as DEAC.Do not perform this maintenance for cooling systems that are filled with Cat Extended Life Coolant (Cat ELC) or Cat Extended Life Inhibitor (Cat ELI).
Cooling system coolant additive contains alkali. To help prevent personal injury, avoid contact with the skin and eyes. Do not drink cooling system coolant additive.
Excessive supplemental coolant additive concentration can form deposits on the higher temperature surfaces of the cooling system, reducing the engine's heat transfer characteristics. Reduced heat transfer could cause cracking of the cylinder head and other high temperature components.Excessive supplemental coolant additive concentration could also result in blockage of the heat exchanger, overheating, and/or accelerated wear of the water pump seal.Do not exceed the recommended amount of supplemental coolant additive concentration.
Do NOT mix brands or types of SCA. Do NOT mix SCAs and extenders.Failure to follow the recommendations can result in shortened cooling system component life.
Use Only Approved SCAs. Conventional coolants require the maintenance addition of SCA throughout their expected life. Do NOT use an SCA with a coolant unless specifically approved by the coolant supplier for use with their coolant. It is the responsibility of the coolant manufacturer to ensure compatibility and acceptable performance.Failure to follow the recommendations can result in shortened cooling system component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting, and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Cat Dealer Service Tool Catalog" and to Special Publication, GECJ0003, "Cat Shop Supplies and Tools" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Cat products.Dispose of all fluids according to applicable regulations and mandates.
Note: Caterpillar recommends the performance of an S O S Coolant Analysis (Level 1) in order to check the concentration of the SCA.Maintain the Proper Concentration of SCA in the Coolant or Water/SCA Mixture
Pressurized System: Hot coolant can cause serious burns. To open the cooling system filler cap, stop the engine and wait until the cooling system components are cool. Loosen the cooling system pressure cap slowly in order to relieve the pressure.
Remove the cooling system filler cap slowly.
Use one of the following methods for testing the concentration of SCA and water or coolant:
For cooling systems filled with conventional coolant, test the concentration of the SCA with a 286-2578 Nitrite Test Strip.
For cooling systems filled with water and a supplemental coolant additive, test the concentration of SCA with a 298-5311 Nitrite Test Strip.
Review the results of the S O S Coolant Analysis (Level 1).
If necessary, drain some coolant in order to allow space for the addition of the SCA.
Add the amount of SCA required to maintain the correct concentration of SCA:
From 3 percent to 6 percent of SCA in the coolant
Up to 8 percent concentration of SCA in water
Clean the cooling system filler cap. Install the cooling system filler cap. For further
