Information:
Use this procedure in order to troubleshoot engine overspeed. Also, use this procedure if one of the following event codes is active.

CDL Code and Description Conditions which Generate this Code System Response
E362(1) Engine Overspeed The engine rpm has exceeded the trip point for engine overspeed for the delay time. The code is logged.
The Electronic Control Module (ECM) will not power the injectors above the engine high idle speed.
E362(3) Engine Overspeed The code is logged.
The engine is shut down. Note: If the engine is shut down due to an engine overspeed, power to the ECM must be cycled before restarting the engine.Probable Causes
Turbocharger oil seal
Intake air is combustible.
Sudden drop of loadRecommended Actions
Note: The procedures have been listed in order of probability. Complete the procedures in order.

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Proper Operation of the Turbocharger
A. Check for proper operation of the turbocharger.
B. Check for any oil that may be leaking into the air inlet.
Turbocharger
Result: The turbocharger is not leaking oil into the inlet.- OK
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: The turbocharger is leaking oil into the inlet. - NOT OK
Repair: Repair or replace the turbocharger.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
2. Check for Combustible Intake Air
A. Check for combustible gases in the surrounding atmosphere.
B. Check for proper operation of starting aids (if equipped).
Intake Air
Result: There are no combustible gasses in the surrounding atmosphere. - OK
Result: There are combustible gasses in the surrounding atmosphere. NOT OK
Repair: Do not operate the engine in an environment with combustible gases.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to the next step.
3. Check for a Sudden Drop of Engine Load
A. Converse with the operator about the overspeed event.
Engine Load
Result: The operator confirms that the overspeed was caused by a sudden drop of engine load.
