Caterpillar is experiencing a significant number of failures with the 217-6566 Position Sensor Gp incorporated into the 230-7913 Tilt Cylinder and Sensor Gp that are installed on 988G and 988H machines that are equipped for steel mill applications.Caterpillar is also experiencing a very limited number of failures with the 217-6567 Position Sensor Gp incorporated into the 230-7914 Lift Cylinder and Sensor Gp that are installed on 988G and 988H machines that are equipped for steel mill applications.The failures that are under investigation include the following:
Wires that are separated
Faulty signals
Sensor rods that are bent
Sensor rods that are broken
Sensor rods that are rubbingThe 217-6566 Position Sensor Group is incorporated into the 230-7913 Tilt Cylinder and Sensor Gp . The 230-7913 Tilt Cylinder and Sensor Gp is incorporated into the 2Q-8533 Steel Mill Ar on 988G machines that are equipped for steel mill applications.The 217-6567 Position Sensor Group is incorporated into the 230-7914 Lift Cylinder and Sensor Gp . The 230-7914 Lift Cylinder and Sensor Gp is incorporated into the 2Q-8633 Steel Mill Ar on 988G machines that are equipped for steel mill applications.Refer to Table 1 and Table 2 for the breakdown of the part numbers.

There is no known solution for these failures at this time. Therefore, the dealer must replace failed components with the same part number until a permanent corrective action is determined.Failures of the position sensors are currently under investigation as part of Continious Product Improvement project 162993. Dealers should notify the dealer technical communicator (T/C) immediately upon experiencing any of these failures. The T/C will process the appropriate service request through the dealer solution network (DSN) to the Tier II service engineer for the Hydraulic and Hydraulic Systems.Note: Do not discard any failed components. The failed components may be required for further analysis.
