D9L (14Y),
D10 (84W, 76X),
D10N (3SK, 2YD),
D10R (3KR),
D11N (4HK, 74Z),
D11R (9TR, 9XR, 8ZR) TRACK-TYPE TRACTORSProblem:
The equalizer bar end pin bearings are extremely hard and brittle as a result of the manufacturing processes used. This hard bearing provides excellent wear resistance; however, care must be taken when the end pins are driven through the end pin bearings during on-site assembly or repair. The end pin bearing may be cracked or chipped during installation, causing subsequent failures to occur.Solution:
The bores of the equalizer bar and the track roller frame should be well aligned before the pin is installed in the joint. The impact of the sledge hammer can damage the bearing if the pin is not aligned correctly. The damage will often not be noticed until a subsequent failure occurs. If the bearing is properly installed, there is no reason for the joint not to exceed major undercarriage repair cycles. The joint should be reviewed and the seal replaced as a normal maintenance item whenever there is a major undercarriage work (5000 to 10,000 service hours). Removal of the end pin bearings requires the use of a press. It is not acceptable to cut the bearings out or to drive the bearings out by hitting the spherical ball with a sledge hammer. Cutting the bearing out can result in damage to the end pin bore as well as preventing the bearing from being used to determine the root cause of failure. Driving the pin out can also cause damage to the bearing and again prevent it from being used in identifying the root cause of failure.COPYRIGHT 1998 CATERPILLAR ALL RIGHTS RESERVED
