J1939 Code Code Description
(code descriptions may vary) Comments
3242-18 Low DPF #1 Intake Temperature The A5:E2 Aftertreatment Controller has detected Low DPF regeneration temperature.
Active regeneration is immediately disabled. Engine power is derated. The code is logged. The code remains active until electrical power to the A5:E2 Aftertreatment Controller is cycled. The following conditions can cause this code:
The exhaust piping between the outlet of the turbocharger and the intake of the DPF is disconnected and/or the DPF Inlet Temperature sensor has failed.
3711-31 Particulate Trap Active Regeneration Inhibited Due to Low Exhaust Gas Temperature Active regeneration failed due to an inability of the Diesel Particulate Filter (DPF) to reach a high enough temperature. The code is logged. Engine power is derated.
Follow the troubleshooting procedure in order to identify the root cause of the problem.

Troubleshooting Test Steps Values Results
1. Check for Associated Diagnostic Trouble Codes
A. Establish communication between Cat ET and the Electronic Control Module (ECM). Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electronic Service Tools", if necessary.
B. Download the "Warranty Report" from the engine ECM before performing any troubleshooting or clearing associated diagnostic trouble codes.
C. Table 1 lists the diagnostic trouble codes that are associated with the 3711-31 code. Determine if any of the codes in Table 1 are present.
Diagnostic code
Result: An associated diagnostic trouble code is not present.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: An associated diagnostic trouble code is present.
Troubleshoot the associated diagnostic code.
2. Inspect the Exhaust Piping
A. Carefully Inspect the exhaust piping between the turbocharger and the intake of the DPF. Look for the following problems:
1. Missing piping, cracked piping, or disconnected piping
2. Broken clamps or missing clamps
Damaged or missing piping
Result: The piping is not damaged or missing.
Proceed to Test Step 3.

Damaged wiring or sensor
Result: The wiring and sensor are not damaged.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The wiring and sensor are damaged.
Make the necessary repairs. Proceed to Test Step 5.
4. Turbocharger Compressor Bypass Valve Test
A. Use Cat ET to perform an "Turbocharger Compressor Bypass Valve Test" in order to verify that the problem is resolved.
Turbocharger Compressor Bypass Valve Test
Result: The "Turbocharger Compressor Bypass Valve Test" failed.
There is a problem with the Turbocharger Compressor Bypass Valve. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Turbocharger Compressor Bypass - Test".
Result: The "Turbocharger Compressor Bypass Valve Test" passed.
Proceed to Test Step 5.
5. Perform a Manual DPF Regeneration With Load Applied to the Engine
A. Clear the 3242-18 or 3711-31 code using Cat ET.
B. Start the engine and apply load by engaging the Header and the Thresher.
D. Perform a "Manual DPF Regeneration" using CAT ET.
Test was successful
Result: The Manual DPF Regeneration was successful.
Return the engine to service.
Result: The Manual DPF Regeneration was not successful.
Replace the DPF Inlet Temperature sensor. Repeat the Manual DPF Regeneration.
