Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Products Guide", NENG2500 for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose of fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Turn the engine with Tool (A) until the bolts in camshaft rear gear (1) are visible. Remove the four bolts. Pull gear (1) loose from the camshaft.2. Turn the engine with Tool (A) until the "V" marks on the front of the timing gears are in alignment. Install Tool (B) through gear (1) into the camshaft. 3. Remove two bolts (3) and the plate.4. Pull camshaft assembly (2) approximately 50.8 mm (2.00 in) out of the cylinder block.5. Fasten gear (1) to the flywheel housing with wire. Remove Tool (B) and remove gear (1).
When Tool (B) is removed the rear camshaft gear is free to fall into the flywheel housing. If the gear falls into the flywheel housing the flywheel housing must be removed to remove the gear.
6. Remove the camshaft assembly from the cylinder block.
Be careful not to damage the camshaft bearings or the camshaft journals as the camshaft is removed.
7. If necessary, remove the camshaft gear with Tool (D). Remove the dowel on the taper end of the camshaft with Tooling (C).Install Camshaft
1. Heat gear (1) to a maximum temperature of 205°C (400°F). Install gear (1) on camshaft (2). Make sure the key for gear (1) is in position on camshaft (2) before gear (1) is installed.2. Install pin (3) until it is extended 8.76 0.25 mm (.345 .011 in) from the end of the camshaft.3. Put 2P-2506 Anti-Seize Compound on the camshaft lobes and valve lifter rollers. Put clean engine oil on the bearing journals of the camshaft.4. Install the camshaft until the rear of the camshaft is even with the rear of the cylinder block.5. Fasten a safety wire to the rear camshaft gear. Put the gear in position and use Tool (B) to hold it. 6. Make an alignment of the "V" mark on gear (1) with "V" mark on gear (5) and install the camshaft all the way in the cylinder block.7. Install plate (4) and the bolts. 8. Make an alignment of the dowel in the rear of the camshaft with the dowel hole in camshaft rear gear (6). Remove Tool (B) and the safety wire.9. Turn the engine with Tool (A) and install the bolts to hold gear (6). Because of the position of the bolts the torque on the bolts must be checked three times. For more detailed information regarding the camshaft, see the topic "Camshaft" in the Specifications Module.End By:a. install valve lifters and push rodsb. install timing gear cover
