"Quick Disconnect Coupling On Optional Modification Of 5P4150 Nozzle Tester Permits Faster Exchange Of Adapters" on Page 1 of the October 3, 1979 Engine News. The reference article tells how to install a quick-disconnect coupling on the 5P4150 Nozzle Tester to permit a more rapid exchange of nozzle adapters. There are now some changes to the original modification, including more applications, and some new fittings which are easier to use and have a lower cost than those shown in the reference article. The new fittings are similar to the former fittings, but are not a direct replacement, and can not be mixed with the former fittings.
The former parts no longer used are the 5P9701 Coupler Assembly and 5P9715 Nipples. The 5P9701 Coupler Assembly has been canceled.
In place of the former coupler for new optional modifications, use one 6V4143 Coupler Assembly and one 5P3238 Reducing Pipe Nipple. With the new 6V4143 Coupler Assembly, a new 6V3989 Nipple (coupler) must be used in place of the former 5P9715 Nipple (coupler), which has also been canceled. For comparison of the coupler assemblies: 5P9701 has a 1/4 - 18 outside pipe thread, and 6V4143 has a 1/8 - 27 inside pipe thread.
The procedure that follows shows installation of the new fittings for the adapters in the reference article, plus those for direct injection nozzles used in 3300 Series Engines.
INSTALLATION PROCEDURE
1. Cut tubes for the nozzle adapters as follows:A. Cut exactly 59 mm (2.3") from the short end of a 5P4721 Tube. Use this tube for the 5P8744 Adapter Assembly. The length cut from the tube for this adapter is important because the volume of fluid in the tester is the basis for the "Pressure Loss Test" of capsule-type fuel nozzles. The volume of test fluid in the new fitting is the same as the volume in the length of tube removed. The lengths cut from the tubes that follow for the other adapters are less important, and can be approximate.B. Cut approximately 75 mm (3.0") from the short ends of three 5P4721 Tubes and one 6V2171 Tube Assembly.C. Cut approximately 75 mm (3.0") from the long end of one 6V2170 Tube Assembly.2. Remove all burrs from the cut ends and thoroughly clean the tubes.3. Install a 5P4719 Fitting Assembly and 6V3989 Nipple on the cut end of each tube. See Illustration 1. Also, see the topic "Replacement of 5P4721 Tube" in Special Instruction Form SEHS7292.4. On the opposite end of each tube, use a 3J1905 Sleeve and 3J1906 Nut (also parts of 5P4719 and/or 5P4720 Fitting) to install each adapter as shown in Illustration 1.
Illustration 1. Assembly of parts for improved optional modification.5. Remove the original tube assembly and 5P4719 Fitting from the tester.6. Install a 5P3238 Nipple and 6V4143 Coupler Assembly. See Illustration 2.
Illustration 2. New nipple and coupler assembly installed in tester.7. To test 9L8965 Nozzles (for early 1100 Series Engines), install a 6V4142 Nipple and 9S7341 Fitting on an 8S2268 Tube Assembly with no modification. See Illustration 3.
