The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects the following condition:
Engine coolant temperature that is lower than the default temperature of 75 °C (167 °F) for five seconds
The ECM has been powered up for ten minutes.Note: The "Low Coolant Temperature" monitoring will not wait in order for the engine to start running. The "Trip Delay" at start-up begins when the ECM powers up. For EPG engines, low coolant temperature indicates that a water jacket heater may not be functioning.System Response:The event is logged. After the temperature returns above 77 °C (171 °F) for four seconds the warning due to low coolant temperature will be turned off.Possible Performance Effect:

There may be a problem with the cooling system.
There may be a problem with the coolant temperature sensor.Test Step 1. Check for Diagnostic Codes
Start the Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET).
Turn the main power to the ON position.
Check for any active diagnostic codes or logged diagnostic codes. Expected Result:No diagnostic codes are present.Results:
OK - No diagnostic codes are present. Proceed to Test 2.
Not OK - Diagnostic codes are present.Repair: Repair the diagnostic codes that are present. Refer to the appropriate topic in the "Troubleshooting With a Diagnostic Code" section of this manual. Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.STOPTest Step 2. Perform a Check of the Cooling System.
Perform a check of the cooling system. Refer to the Testing and Adjusting manual for information on inspecting the cooling system. Expected Result:There are no problems with the cooling system.Results:
OK - There may be an intermittent problem.Repair: Monitor the operation of the engine. Repair the problem. Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.STOP
Not OK - There is a problem with the cooling system.Repair: Repair the cooling system. Ensure that the repair eliminates the problem.STOP
