Hot oil and hot components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or hot components to contact the skin.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

Remove cover plate (1) from the rear axle housing.

Remove the filter housing drain plug. Drain the oil into a suitable container. Clean the drain plug and install the drain plug. Note: Removing the drain plug from the bottom of the filter housing may not drain all of the oil from the filter.
Remove filter housing (2) and the filter element. Discard the used filter element.
Wash the filter housing in clean nonflammable solvent.
Inspect the seals in the filter base. If the seals are damaged, replace the seals.
Install the new filter element in the filter housing. Install the filter housing. Note: The machine is shipped with a fine filtration filter. After the initial 10 hours of operation, this filter element should be replaced with a standard element.
Install the cover plate.
Start the engine and operate the engine at low idle. Check for leaks and make any necessary repairs.
Observe the oil level when the oil is warm and the transmission is in the NEUTRAL position. Make sure that the parking brake is engaged.

Maintain the proper oil level (4) for the differential to the bottom of sight gauge (3).
If necessary, add oil. Note: Correct oil levels are critical in the differential housing. Allow oil to fill all of the compartments. Check the oil level after repairs and after maintenance. Check the oil level prior to operation.Note: In long hauling applications and high speed applications, overfilling the differential or transferring of oil into the differential will cause overheating and foaming of the oil. A reduction of the life of components may be the result of overheating and foaming of the oil.
