Inspection of the Chain
Issues have been reported regarding the chain that is used to remove the counterweight. Inspection and lubrication of the chain must be done in order to eliminate the possibility of breakage of the chain. The chain should be inspected at 250 hours of service. The chain must be kept clean and free from rust. A chain that has dirt or rust can not be wound correctly.Lubrication of the Chain
Inspect the chain. Ensure that the chain is free of defects, rust, or foreign contaminants.
Remove any foreign material and rust from the chain.
Lubricate the surfaces between each link plate edge and the roller. Use CAT 4A 1U-8801 Rust Preventive Oil or 185-5123 Rust Preventive Oil . The chain should be lubricated at 1000 hours of service.Note: Always lubricate the chain during the removal of the counterweight. Ensure that the counterweight is lowered to the blocks on the ground.Cleaning of the Chain
If necessary, remove the entire chain assembly in order to properly clean the chain assembly of rust and foreign contaminants.
Clean the chain assembly with a clean, nonflammable solvent and a wire brush.
Allow the chain assembly to dry. Lubricate the surfaces between each link plate edge and the roller with CAT 4A 1U-8801 Rust Preventive Oil or 185-5123 Rust Preventive Oil .
If the chain assembly was removed, install the chain assembly.Note: Always keep the chain clean and free of rust and foreign contaminants.
