Introduction
For Specifications with illustrations, make reference to POWER TRAIN SPECIFICATIONS FOR 992 WHEEL LOADER, Form No. REG01564. If the Specifications in Form REG01564 are not the same as in the Systems Operation and the Testing and Adjusting, look at the printing date on the back cover of each book. Use the Specifications in the book with the latest date.Troubleshooting
The purpose of this section is to find and correct problems which cause power train failures. If a more detailed inspection is necessary, use 7S8875 or 8M2736 Hydraulic Test Box. For pressure tap locations and procedures for making tests and adjustments see the 992 POWER SHIFT TRANSMISSION TESTING AND ADJUSTING, Form No. REG01563.Always make visual checks first, operation checks second, and instrument checks third.Visual Checks
1. Check the oil levels of the transmission and differentials.2. Check all oil lines, valves, and their connections for leakage or damage.3. Check the control linkages for the transmission and torque converter for damage and/or adjustment.4. Check the element of the transmission oil filter and the magnetic screen for the following materials: a. Bronze colored particles are an indication of failure of the transmission clutches.b. Shiny steel particles are an indication of failure of oil pump.c. Aluminum particles are an indication of torque converter failure.d. Rubber particles are an indication of a damaged seal or hose.If this material is found in the system, clean all components of the system, and make repairs or replacements of all damaged components.Checks During Operation
With the engine running, move the selector lever for the transmission to all its positions. The engagement of the detents and notches in their respective cams can be felt in each position.Operate the machine at all speeds in each direction. If any noises that are not normal operating noises are heard, find their sources. If the operation of the machine is not normal, see "problems" and "probable causes" under OPERATIONS CHECK LIST.Operations Check List
Transmission
PROBLEM: Does not operate in any speed or clutches do not fully engage (slip) in all speeds. PROBABLE CAUSE:1. Low oil pressure caused by: a. Low oil level.b. Control linkage has damage or is out of adjustment.c. Failure of oil pump or oil pump drive.d. Air leakage on inlet side of oil pump.e. Leakage from inside of transmission.f. Spool for pressure relief valve is out of adjustment or does not move freely.g. Load pistons, pressure reducing valve, pressure reducing and modulating valve, safety valve, or check valve do not move freely.2. Mechanical failure in transmission.3. Torque converter failure.4. Bevel pinion and/or bevel gear failure. PROBLEM: Transmission does not change (shift) from one speed or direction to another. PROBABLE CAUSE:1. Low oil level.2. Low clutch pressures.3. Control linkage has damage or is out of adjustment. PROBLEM: Slow change (shift) from one speed or direction to another. PROBABLE CAUSE:1. Low oil pressure.2. Control linkages inside and/or outside of the transmission have damage or are out of adjustment.3. Air leakage on inlet side of oil pump.4. Load pistons, pressure reducing valve, pressure reducing and modulating valve, safety
