2007 model year C7 and C9 turbochargers are being replaced for oil that is leaking across the seals on either the exhaust side or the side of compression. The closed crankcase on the 2007 model year C7 and C9 make the turbochargers sensitive to pressure differentials. Oil that is leaking across the seal is usually an indication of another system problem. Examples of conditions that can cause oil to leak across the turbocharger are high back pressure, leakage of boost, excessive crankcase pressure, low crankcase pressure and diluted oil.Solution
All turbochargers for engine S/N:C7S and engine ; S/N:C9S have a parts freeze placed on the parts that are in inventory. Caterpillar has analyzed all field returns that were reported for "oil passing of the turbocharger" and have found no failures. This is the reason for placing the turbochargers on a parts freeze. It is critical to follow Troubleshooting, RENR9342, "Turbocharger Air Line Has Oil Present" before ordering a turbocharger or contacting your Caterpillar Technical Communicator. If the troubleshooting does not lead to a root cause then contact your Caterpillar Technical Communicator for additional troubleshooting assistance.
