When the fuel viscosity is reduced to ten cSt, the valve which allows fuel flow through the fuel cooler should be opened slowly, until there is maximum flow of fuel to the fuel cooler.--------------- END SUPPLEMENT ---------------Caterpillar 3600 Diesel Engines are designed to start, stop, and operate on heavy fuels. These engines can also operate on distillate fuel with the same component configurations. There may also be a mixture of each fuel during operation. Caution is advised when switching between HFO and distillate fuel too quickly. Take precautions to avoid thermal shock and a lack of lubricity because of wide differences in fuel temperature control.
There are many reasons to temporarily change from HFO to distillate fuel: * When the engine is being stopped to conduct maintenance on fuel system components, such as fuel filters or fuel injectors.* When the engine is shutdown for an indefinite period of time and fuel circulation through the engine is stopped.* When the heavy fuel supply is restricted, reduced, or eliminated.* After any overhaul or fuel systems maintenance/replacement, test the engine with distillate fuel before returning the engine to HFO operation. Distillate fuel is much easier to clean up if a leak develops on initial start up.
The changeover between HFO and distillate fuel should be done with the engine running at fifty percent of Rated Load. This is done to help prevent thermal shock that may result in stuck fuel injectors.
Follow the recommended procedures before starting an engine. Incomplete procedural techniques can lead to system malfunctions that will not allow engine operation.
Changeover From HFO To Distillate Fuel With The Engine Running At 50 Percent Of Rated Load
