Note: Bearing cups and cones must be seated in the housing before assembling the components. Use 0.038 mm (.0015 inch) shim stock or a standard feeler gauge in order to verify that the components are seated properly.
Position the housing horizontally. Assemble gears (1) and (4), bearing cages (3) and (6), and the bearings without the shims.
Install two bolts and the washers at a 180° interval in each bearing cage (3) and (6), and tighten the bolts to a torque of 20.3 N m (180 lb in).
Rotate gears (1) and (4) about 30° for three or four times. Tighten the bolts in each bearing cage (3) and (6) to a torque of 40.7 N m (360 lb in).
Rotate gears (1) and (4) about 30° for three or four times. Without moving the gears, back off the bolts in each bearing cage (3) and (6). Tighten the bolts again until the bolts are finger tight. Next, tighten the bolts to a torque of 20.3 N m (180 lb in).
Rotate gears (1) and (4) about 30° for three or four times. Tighten the bolts in each bearing cage (3) and (6) to a torque of 20.3 N m (180 lb in). Continue to tighten the bolts in each bearing cage (3) and (6) until the bolts do not move at a torque of 20.3 N m (180 lb in).
Use a tapered feeler gauge or another suitable measuring device in order to measure the gaps between the housing and bearing cages (3) and (6). Take two measurements for each bearing cage (3) and (6), and measure the gaps at each bolt. Measure the gap between the bearing cage and the housing from the center of the bolt to the outside diameter of the flange.
Add the two measurements for each bearing cage. Divide the sum for each bearing cage by two. This is the average gap for each bearing cage. Note: Step 8 is used for the gap at bearing cage (3).
Add 0.41 mm (.016 inch) to the average gap measurement in order to determine the thickness of the shims. Note: Step 9 is used for the gap at bearing cage (6).
Add 0.46 mm (.018 inch) to the average gap measurement in order to determine the thickness of the shims.
Assemble the correct shim pack in order to match the thickness in Step 8 or Step 9. Use a micrometer, and verify that the thickness of the shim packs agree with the thickness in Step 8 or Step 9.
Remove bearing cages (3) and (6). Install shim packs (2) and (5), any required O-ring seals, and bearing cages (3) and (6). Install the bolts in bearing cages (3) and (6), and tighten the bolts to the required torque.
