Test Step A - Hookup
TEST STEP A - HOOKUP INDICATION CHART1. Turn the main power key switch to the ON position.2. Make a comparison of the indicators that are ON, with the indicators that must be ON for Test Step A. In the Hookup Test, the analyzer makes these checks: A. Start Ground Circuit - makes no test in this test step.B. Batteries - checks the open circuit voltage. This is an indication of the charge level of the batteries.C. Alternator Breaker - checks for too much change in voltage (voltage drop) through the alternator circuit breaker caused by too much resistance, or by a tripped (open) circuit breaker.D. Key Breaker - checks for too much change in voltage (voltage drop) through the circuit breaker for the main power key switch caused by too much resistance, or by a tripped (open) circuit breaker. E. Key Start Switch - measures the change in voltage (voltage drop):1. from the key breaker, through the harnesses to the key switch,2. through the ON contacts of the key switch,3. back through the harnesses to the coil connection of the main power relay.If there is too much resistance in a harness connection or the switch contacts, or if there is an open in a harness or the switch contacts, there is an indication of a fault.F. Main Relay and/or Breaker - checks that the main power circuit breaker is not tripped (open), and that the main power relay is closed. It also checks that there is not too much resistance in the contacts of, or the connections to these components. A failure of either component will give an indication of a fault.G. Coolant Switch - checks that the engine coolant temperature switch in the start aid (ether) circuit is CLOSED. It will give an indication of a fault if the switch is open, or if there is too much resistance in the switch contacts. This switch is a normally closed switch that opens at 37.9°C (100°F) with an increase in engine coolant temperature, and closes at 26.7°C (80°F) with a decrease in temperature.H. Start Aid Switch/Solenoid - checks that the start aid switch is OPEN, and that the coil of the ether solenoid is NOT OPEN.I. Start Relay - makes sure that the start relay contacts are OPEN.J. Starter Solenoid Power Circuit - makes no test in this test step.K. Starter Solenoid - makes sure that the starter solenoid contacts are OPEN. If the vehicle has the attachment second starting system, the tests for the #2 Start Relay, Starter Solenoid Power Circuit, and Starter Solenoid are the same as for the standard (#1) starting system. If the vehicle does not have a second starting system, the indicators for the #2 Starter will be OFF in all test steps.L. #2 Start Relay
