Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Cleanliness is an important factor. Before assembly, all parts should be thoroughly cleaned in cleaning fluid. Allow the parts to air dry. Wiping cloths or rags should not be used to dry parts. Lint may be deposited on the parts which may cause later trouble. Inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new parts for replacement. Inspect all gaskets and seals. If any gaskets or seals are worn or damaged, use new gaskets or seals for replacement. All disassembly and all assembly procedures must be performed on a clean work surface and in a clean hydraulic area. Keep cleaned parts covered and protected at all times.

Perform all necessary repairs to the hydraulic cylinder before assembly. Refer to Guideline for Reusable Parts and Salvage Operations, SEBF8072, "Inspection and Salvage of Hydraulic Cylinder Components" for information on reusability and salvage procedures.Note: Make sure that the grooves for the seals in head (11) are thoroughly clean prior to assembly.
Use Tooling (C) to thoroughly wash the inside of the cylinder. For the correct instructions on cleaning the cylinder, refer to Tool Operating Manual, NEHS0632, "Procedure for Using the 120-9143 Cylinder Wash Tank Gp ".
Apply a thin coat of clean hydraulic oil to the contact surfaces of the seals. Install the following components to head (11) : backup ring (8), O-ring seal (7), wear ring (3), buffer seal assembly (4) and U-cup seal (5). Apply 7M-7456 Bearing Mount Compound to the counterbore for wiper seal (6) prior to assembly. Use Tooling (B) to install wiper seal (6) into head (11) .
Put head (11) in position on cylinder assembly (9). Install ten bolts (1) and (2) that secure the head. Head (11) weighs approximately 70 kg (155 lb).
Place rod assembly (12) in Tooling (A). Use Tooling (A) to slide rod assembly (12) into head (11). The weight of the rod assembly is approximately 810 kg (1785 lb).
Remove bolts (1) and (2). Use Tooling (A) to slide rod assembly (12) and head (11) out of cylinder assembly (9). The weight of the cylinder assembly is approximately 1147 kg (2530 lb).
Install piston (10) on the rod assembly. Install six bolts (13) and the washers in order to secure the piston to the rod assembly. Tighten bolts (13) to a torque of
