Remove two split pins (2) and nuts (3). Use Tooling (C) to release tie rod (4) from the steering case of each axle hub (1) .

Loosen locknut (5) and remove one tie rod (4) in order to allow one side of the cylinder rod to pass through the axle housing.

Loosen nuts (6) in order to disconnect two hoses (7) from steering cylinder (10). Remove two adapters (8) and the O-rings from steering cylinder (10). Remove five bolts (9) .

Use a second person to help you support steering cylinder (10) while you carefully withdraw the steering cylinder. The weight of the steering cylinder is approximately 22 kg (50 lb).

Secure steering cylinder (10) in a suitable soft jawed vise. Bend back lockwasher (11) and use Tooling (B) in order to remove two ball joints (12) .Installation Procedure

Clean all parts and inspect all parts. If any parts are worn or damaged, use new Caterpillar parts for replacement.

Secure steering cylinder (10) in a suitable soft jawed vise. Apply a small amount of Tooling (D) to two ball joints (12) and install the ball joints. Tighten the two ball joints to a torque of 525 25 N m (387 18 lb ft). Bend back each lockwasher (11) .

Use a second person to help you support steering cylinder (10) while you carefully install the steering cylinder. The weight of the steering cylinder is approximately 22 kg (50 lb).

Apply a small amount of Tooling (D) onto five bolts (9). Install five bolts (9). Install two adapters (8) and new O-rings into steering cylinder (10). Connect two hoses (7) onto steering cylinder (10) and tighten nuts (6) .

Install tie rod (4) and tighten locknut (5).

Install two tie rods (4) into the steering cases of each axle hub (1). Install two nuts (3) and tighten the nuts to a torque of 275 15 N m (200 10 lb ft). Install two split pins (2) .
Remove Tooling (A) after the wheels have been installed., End By:
Adjust the steering angle for both hubs. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Wheel Alignment - Check and Adjust".
Install both road wheels. Refer to Power Train, Disassembly and AssemblyRENR3436, "Wheel and Tire - Remove and Install".
