Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil is hot and under pressure. Hot oils can cause burns.To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the work tool hydraulic circuit (boom, stick, bucket, and swing), travel circuits, and the hydraulic oil tank at the filler cap before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.Remove the filler cap only when the engine is stopped and the filler cap is cool enough to touch.
Lower the boom to the ground.
Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release".

Disconnect lubrication hose assembly (1).

Typical Example
Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to boom cylinder (4).
Remove bolts (2). Remove retainer plate (3) and the spacer.
Repeat Step 5 in order to remove the retainer plate on the opposite boom cylinder.

Make sure that the threaded puller hole in the end of support pin (5) is clean. Fasten Tooling (A) to the side opposite of the boom cylinder that is being removed. Fasten a lifting sling and a hoist to Tooling (A) for support. Use Tooling (A) in order to pull support pin (5) out of the rod end of the boom cylinder.

Lower the boom cylinder onto Tooling (B). Adjust the height of Tooling (B) so the cylinder is level.
Repeat Steps 3 through 8 in order to disconnect the other boom cylinder.

Disconnect harness assembly (6) and remove clip (7).
Disconnect hose assemblies (8).
Personal injury can result from hydraulic oil pressure and hot oil.Hydraulic oil pressure can remain in the hydraulic system after the engine has been stopped. Serious injury can be caused if this pressure is not released before any service is done on the hydraulic system.Make sure all of the attachments have been lowered, oil is cool before removing any components or lines. Remove the oil filler cap only when the engine is stopped, and the filler cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.

Use a hoist, lifting slings, and Tooling (C) to support the boom. The weight of the boom is approximately 8165 kg (18,000 lb).

Remove bolt (10) from pin assembly (9).

Make sure that the threaded puller hole in pin assembly (9) is clean. Use a lifting sling and a hoist to support Tooling (D). Fasten Tooling (D) to pin assembly (9). Use the threaded rod that is 415 mm (16.3 inch) in length to move the pin assembly approximately 150 mm (6.0 inch). Use the threaded rod that is 255 mm (10 inch) in length to remove the pin assembly.
