Note: Do not adjust the engine speed control during start-up. The electronic control module (ECM) will control the engine speed during start-up.Starting the Engine
Disengage any equipment that is driven by the engine.
Turn the keyswitch to the RUN position. Leave the keyswitch in the RUN position until the warning light for the glow plugs is extinguished.
When the warning light for the glow plugs is extinguished, turn the keyswitch to the START position to engage the electric starting motor and crank the engine.Note: The operating period of the warning light for the glow plugs will change due to the temperature of the engine.
Do not engage the starting motor when flywheel is turning. Do not start the engine under load.If the engine fails to start within 30 seconds, release the starter switch or button and wait two minutes to allow the starting motor to cool before attempting to start the engine again.
Allow the keyswitch to return to the RUN position after the engine starts.
Repeat step 2 through step 4 if the engine fails to start.
After starting, the engine may be held at low speed for a duration between 1 and 25 seconds to allow engine systems to stabilize. The duration will depend on ambient temperature, time since last run and other factors. The glow plug warning light will flash to indicate that the engine is been held at low speed.Refer to this Operation and Maintenance Manual, After Starting Engine for more information.Constant Speed Engines

The duration will depend on ambient temperature, time since last run and other factors. The glow plug warning light will flash to indicate that the engine is been held at low speed. The engine should be allowed to operate at idle for 3 to 5 minutes before applying the load. Once the load is applied, the engine will operate at the rated speed that has been programmed. The engine will stay at the rated speed and will not return to idle, even if the load has been removed. If necessary, refer to the instructions that are provided by the OEM to stop the engine.
