To meet EPA regulations in 2017, a physical DEF quality sensor has been added to the engine. New software strategy was developed for the functionality of the DEF quality sensor. The new parameter used for the installation of this sensor is the "DEF Quality Sensor Installation Status".Note: Confirm that the engine is equipped with the DEF quality sensor before enabling the "DEF Quality" in Cat ET. Refer to Special Instruction, M0079226, Diesel Exhaust Fluid Quality Sensor Updates on C9.3 - C18 Tier 4 Final Engines for more information.False 3516-12 Aftertreatment #1 DEF Concentration : Failure
Issue
When the DEF header gets below −40° C (−40° F), there have been cases of the 3516-12 Aftertreatment #1 DEF Concentration : Failure becoming active or logged.Resolution
Adjust the temperature trip point to the minimal DEF monitoring requirement.Correct Estimated DEF Level after Tank Drained during Power Off
Issue
Incorrect reading the DEF level at key On, if the DEF tank is drained.Resolution
After the ECM power-up, based on the raw sensor value and the virtual DEF level value, the system will determine if the tank is empty or not.DEF Injector De-Crystallization Regeneration Improvements
Issue
Hydrocarbon (HC) Evaporation type regeneration is not run at a high enough temperature.Resolution
Regeneration time is extended when a fail to pass pressure build-up mode. Longer HC Evaporation regenerations reduce crystallization.False 3516-2 Aftertreatment #1 DEF Concentration : Erratic, Intermittent, or Incorrect
Issue
During cold weather, the DEF tank heating concentration values dip down below the threshold.Resolution
DEF quality sensor output filtering implemented to remove spikes during warm-up cycle.Issue
DEF quality sensor is unable to detect the concentration under 13.5%.Resolution
Adjust the minimum DEF level monitoring to greater than 13.5%.False 3516-18 Aftertreatment #1 DEF Concentration : Low - moderate severity (2)
Issue
When the DEF header goes below −40° C (−40° F), there have been false 3516-18 Aftertreatment #1 DEF Concentration : Low - moderate severity (2) becoming active or logged.Resolution
Adjust the temperature trip point to the minimal DEF monitoring requirement and wait until the thaw cycle has completed.False 3516-16 Aftertreatment #1 DEF
