There is no direct mechanical connection between the engine and the transmission. The torque converter (2) is welded into one piece and the torque converter cannot be opened up. The following components are inside the torque converter:
Stator (7)
Turbine (8)
Impeller (9)The torque converter uses oil to send torque from the engine to the transmission. When the machine is working against a load, the torque converter multiplies the torque from the engine and the torque converter sends a higher torque to the transmission. The oil for the operation of the torque converter comes from the oil pump for the transmission. The oil pump is driven by gear (4). The oil flows to a flow control valve in the transmission case and the oil flow is divided. Oil is directed to the transmission circuit and to the torque converter circuit. The torque converter inlet oil pressure is controlled by the torque converter inlet relief valve. The inlet relief valve for the converter is mounted in the transmission case below the transmission control valve. The relief valve limits the maximum pressure to the torque converter to 900 kPa (130 psi). The inlet relief valve for the torque converter protects the torque converter from high pressure. High pressure is due to cold oil or some other restriction in the torque converter or some other restriction in the cooler circuit. The flex plate (1) is mounted to the engine flywheel. The flex plate (1) is also mounted to the torque converter (2). The impeller (9) is connected to the inside of the torque converter. The stator support (5) slides over the input shaft (6). The turbine (8) connects to the input shaft (6).The stator (7) connects to the stator support (5). The stator support (5) is mounted to the transmission case and the stator does not turn. The teeth on gear (4) mesh with the splines on the torque converter. The gear (4) meshes with the gear (3) for the oil pump.Oil from the hydraulic controls of the transmission flows into the torque converter. The rotation of the impeller gives force to the oil.The impeller (9) turns with the rotating housing of the torque converter (2) at engine speed. The impeller (9) causes the
