Introduction
Note: Caterpillar recommends S O S Services for monitoring the condition of the fluid systems in your equipment. S O S Services enhance a variety of Caterpillar Preventive Maintenance Programs. This article explains the reasons for elevated silicon levels that can be observed in used oil samples on the electric drive machines listed above. The elevated silicon levels can be dramatic. The customer need not be concerned about these elevated silicon levels as the condition does not indicate excessive wear and/or component failure. However, it is important to understand the cause of the condition.Affected Compartments
The elevated silicon levels found in used oil samples occur in the electric drive cooling/lubrication oil compartment with electric drive stators.Causes of Elevated Silicon Levels
Elevated silicon levels occur when silicon dissolves from a component in the electric drive stator. The silicon level will be the highest in new equipment. However, this reaction can also occur in used equipment, when a new stator is installed. This is a normal occurrence and it does not affect the stator performance or life.Corrective Measures
No corrective measure is required for elevated silicon levels in these machines. Silicon will not affect any of the components in the electric drive cooling/lubrication oil compartment. Monitor the other SOS results in order to ensure proper component functioning. If dirt contamination is suspected, monitor for elevated aluminum and iron values along with the elevated silicon levels. The power train oil normally runs at aluminum levels below 5 parts per million (ppm) and at normal iron levels which are less than 30 parts per million (ppm). These preliminary guidelines can change at any time. As the population of these machines increase, there will be new updates as needed.
