1. Check for Codes
A. Establish communication between Cat® Electronic Technician (ET) and the Electronic Control Module (ECM).
B. Download the "Product Status Report" from the engine ECM before troubleshooting or clearing of diagnostic codes.
Codes
Result: A diagnostic code is not active or logged.
Proceed to Test Step 2.
Result: A diagnostic code is active or logged.
Repair: Troubleshoot the active or logged code using the appropriate procedure from the Troubleshooting manual.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 2.
2. Inspect the Batteries and Cables
A. Inspect the following electrical components for loose connections and corrosion:
- Main power switch
- Battery posts
- Battery cables
If the battery cables are corroded, remove and clean the cables. Tighten any loose connections.
B. Check the resistance of the positive battery cable to the starter. The resistance should be less than 1Ω.
C. Inspect the batteries, refer to the Testing and Adjusting, Battery - Test.
Battery
Result: The batteries and cables are OK.
Proceed to Test Step 3.
Result: The batteries and cables are NOT OK.
Repair: Make any necessary repairs.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 3.
3. Check the Starter Relay
A. Check that the starter relay has 12 V supplied from the machine ECM, the buss fuse, and has a good ground connection.
B. Check that the start relay is operating correctly and provides 12 V to the starter.
Starter relay
Result: The starter relay is OK.
Proceed to Test Step 4.
Result: The starter relay is NOT OK.
Repair: Refer to the machine Electrical Schematic to troubleshoot the circuit.
If the problem is not resolved, proceed to Test Step 4.
4. Check the Starter
A. Check the starter post from the battery supply for 12 V.
B. Check the starter for a good ground.
C. Check that the starter solenoid from the relay is at 12 V during the cranking cycle.
Note: For the Skid Steer Loaders, Multi-Terrain Loaders, and Compact Track Loaders, the belt must be installed. Take the necessary precautions to ensure that there is no contact with the belt during operation.
Starter
Result: The starter is OK.
Repair: Replace the starter.
Result: The starter is NOT OK.
Repair: Repeat Test Step 3 to make the necessary repairs.
