Power Train Oil Filter (1) Filter Base (2) Inlet (3) Filter Housing (4) Outlet (5) Inlet Passage (6) Spring (7) Filter Element (8) Bypass Valve (9) Outlet PassageThe power train oil system contains two power train oil filters: the transmission charge filter and the torque converter charge filter. The power train oil pump supplies oil to both of the filters.Oil enters filter base (1) through inlet (2). The oil goes through the filter base to filter housing (3). Oil fills the space between the inside of filter housing (3) and filter element (7). Normally, oil goes through the filter element and the oil leaves the filter base through outlet (4). Filter element (7) stops any debris that is in the oil.If the filter element becomes full of debris, the restriction to the flow of oil causes a pressure increase. The increase in pressure causes bypass valve (8) to open against spring (6). Oil flows directly from inlet passage (5) to outlet passage (9). Only on the torque converter charge filter, a pressure switch turns on an indicator in the cab in order to alert the operator that the oil filter is plugged. When the oil does not go through the filter element, the oil is dirty and the debris in the oil can cause damage to components in the power train oil system.Correct maintenance procedures must be followed in order to ensure that the filter element does not become full of debris which will stop the flow of clean oil to the power train oil system.
