Walk-Around Inspection
Hot oil and components can cause personal injury. Do not allow hot oil or components to contact skin.At operating temperature, the engine coolant is hot and under pressure.Steam can cause personal injury.Check the coolant level only after the engine has been stopped and the fill cap is cool enough to touch with your bare hand.Remove the fill cap slowly to relieve pressure.Cooling system conditioner contains alkali. Avoid contact with the skin and eyes to prevent personal injury.
For your own safety, and maximum service life of the machine, make a thorough walk-around inspection before mounting the machine or starting the engine.Look around and under the machine for items such as loose or missing bolts, trash build-up, oil, coolant or fuel leaks. Inspect the condition and inflation of tires.Remove any trash and debris. Adjust tire inflation as needed. Have any necessary repairs made, loose connections and parts tightened to their specified torques and any missing parts replaced before starting the engine or operating the machine. 1. Inspect hoist converter and brake hydraulic tank and lines for leaks.2. Inspect transmission tank and lines for leaks.3. Inspect differential and final drive for leaks.4. Inspect condition and cleanliness of steps and hand holds. Repair or replace damaged steps and hand holds.5. Be sure the ground level shutdown handle is pushed IN.6. Inspect engine compartment for oil and fuel leaks. If equipped with a block heater, be sure to disconnect the power source line before starting or moving the machine. 7. Inspect cooling system for leaks and trash build-up. Observe coolant gauge for coolant level.8. Inspect steering hydraulic tank, lines and accumulator for leaks. 9. Inspect the Rollover Protective Structure (ROPS) for damage.10. Inspect operator's compartment for cleanliness, broken or inoperative gauges.Prestart Checks
To prevent possible injury to nearby personnel, be sure area around the machine is clear of personnel and obstructions.
Operating the machine with improperly inflated tires can cause heat build-up in the tire, and cause accelerated tire wear and tire failure.
1. If a tire has cuts or gouges, have it inspected and repaired by your tire dealer. Replace any missing valve stem caps.
Use a self-attaching inflation chuck and stand behind the tire tread while inflating the tire.
Caterpillar recommends using dry nitrogen (N2) gas for both tire inflation and tire pressure adjustments on all rubber tired machines. Nitrogen is an inert gas and will not support combustion inside the tire.If the tire appears to be under or over inflated, check the inflation pressure.Consult your tire dealer for the recommended tire pressures for your job conditions. 2. Check transmission sight gauge (1), hoist converter and brake hydraulic system sight gauge (2) oil levels. With the body (bed) lowered, engine stopped and oil cold, the oil must be to the FULL cold mark in sight gauge (1) and hydraulic tank sight gauge (2). 3. Observe the fuel level on the tank. 4. Service the air cleaner when the YELLOW piston in the indicator reaches the RED zone. The indicator is marked in 5 inch of
