Do not crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Allow the starter to cool for two minutes before cranking again. Turbocharger damage can result if the engine rpm is not kept low until the oil gauge display verifies that the oil pressure is sufficient.
Engine Starting with Air Inlet Heater (If Equipped)
If equipped with an air inlet heater (AIH) for cold weather starting, do not use aerosol types of starting aids such as ether. Such use could result in an explosion and personal injury.
Turn the ignition switch into the ON position. The alert indicator will come on during the heating process prior to starting the engine. The machine can be started after the alert indicator turns off.Release the ignition switch when the engine starts.Note: There is no need to preheat the engine when the temperature is above 10 °C (50 °F). The engine may be started even when the indicator for the preheat system is on. When the temperature of the engine coolant is above 14 °C (57.2 °F) the air inlet heater is deactivated.Note: The preheat time varies between 10 seconds and 30 seconds.Engine Starting with Ether Starting Aid (If Equipped)
Follow Step 1 through Step 7 of the Engine Starting Procedure. A premeasured amount of ether will be automatically injected if the ambient conditions call for starting aid.
Release the engine start switch key after the engine starts. For starting below −18°C (0°F), the use of one of the following cold weather starting aids is recommended:
Coolant heater
Fuel heater
Jacket water heater
