Measuring backlash
Install the dial indicator in Illustration 2, as shown.
Measure the backlash of the gears. Refer to Specifications, "Gear Group (Front)" for the values of the backlash.

Measuring end play of the idler gear
Install the dial indicator in Illustration 3, as shown.
Measure the end play of the idler gear. Refer to Specifications, "Gear Group (Front)" for the values of the end play.

Measuring end play of the camshaft
Install the dial indicator in Illustration 4, as shown.
Measure the end play of the camshaft. Refer to Specifications, "Camshaft" for the values of the end play.Note: The end play is controlled by the camshaft thrust washer. If the end play is not within specifications, replace the thrust washer.
