Illustration 1 g01453048 Connections of the Cat Data Link This diagnostic code is associated with the communication between the Power Train ECM and the monitoring system that is conducted over the Cat Data Link. The FMI 09 code means that the Power Train ECM has lost communication with the Monitoring System. The possible causes of this diagnostic code are listed below: An open connection exists in the circuit for the Cat Data Link. The monitoring system has failed. This is unlikely. The ECM has failed. This is unlikely.Note: If the monitoring system is not operating correctly, refer to , KENR8255 for information on troubleshooting the monitoring system. Ensure that the diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure. Check the monitoring system for correct operation before performing this procedure.Test Step 1. CHECK THE DATA LINK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN. Turn the key start switch and the disconnect switch to the OFF position. Disconnect the connector of the machine harness J1 from the Power Train ECM. Disconnect the machine harness connector from the monitoring system. Inspect the harness connectors and clean all of the contacts of the harness connectors. Refer to the illustration above in order to check the connection of the Cat Data Link on each of the machine harness connectors. Ensure that the wires are secured in the connector and in good condition. At the disconnected harness connectors, measure the resistance from the contact of ECM connector J1-10 (wire 893-GN(Green)) to contact J1-8 (wire 893-GN(Green)) of the VIMS ECM and contact J1-7 (wire 893-GN(Green)) of the Advisor. At the disconnected harness connectors, measure the resistance from contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) of the Power Train ECM to contact J1-6 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) of the VIMS ECM and J1-9 (wire 892-BR(Brown)) of the Advisor. Expected Result:Both of the resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms. Results: OK - Both of the resistance measurements are less than 5 ohms. The Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness is not open. Proceed to Test Step 2. NOT OK - At least one of the resistance measurements is more than 5 ohms.Repair: There is an open or a bad connection in the Cat Data Link circuit in the machine harness. Refer to the complete Electrical System Schematic of the machine. Locate all the connectors and examine all of the connectors of the machine harness that are involved in the data link circuit. Check each wire that is involved in the circuit for an open or a bad connection. Ensure that all connections are clean, that all connections are secure and that all connections are in good condition. Repair the machine harness or replace the machine harness.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK IF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE REMAINS. Inspect the harness connectors. Clean the contacts of the harness connectors and check the wires for damage to the insulation that is caused by excessive heat, battery acid, or chafing. Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires that are associated with the circuit. Reconnect all harness connectors in order to
