At operating temperature, the hydraulic oil lines are hot and under pressure. Before removing any lines, allow the machine to cool and bleed the pressure from the lines by slowly removing the caps from all of the hydraulic oil tanks. Hot hydraulic oil can cause severe personal injury. To prevent possible personal injury, release the pressure in the hydraulic system before any hydraulic lines or components are disconnected or removed.
Release the pressure in the hydraulic system as follows:a. Shut off the engine.b. Move the control levers through their full travel strokes. This will relieve any pressure that may be present in the pilot system.c. Slowly loosen the air breather cap on the hydraulic oil tank to release the pressure.d. Tighten the air breather cap on the hydraulic oil tank.e. The pressure in the hydraulic system has now been released. Lines and components can now be removed. Drain the hydraulic oil from the steering cylinder servo sender in a suitable container for storage or disposal.1. Disconnect hoses (1) from the steering cylinder. Put the caps or plugs in the hoses and the cylinder to keep out dirt and any foreign material.2. Remove nuts (2) [each end of the steering cylinder], steering cylinder (3) and spacers from the machine. Use the reverse procedures for installation of the steering cylinder (servo-sender).3. Tighten nuts (2) to a torque of 245 25 N m (180 18 lb ft). Refer to the Topic "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities" in the "Operation and Maintenance Manual" for the proper filling procedure and the proper levels for the hydraulic system.Disassemble & Assemble Steering Cylinder (Servo Sender)
Start By:a. remove steering cylinder (servo sender) FLUID SPILLAGE CONTAINMENTCare must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the machine. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids. Refer to "Tools And Shop Product Guide, NENG2500", for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids in Caterpillar machines. Dispose fluids according to local regulations and mandates. 1. Remove four bolts (17) and heads (8) and (22) from tube (10).2. Remove rod (15) and piston (20) from piston rod (13).3. Remove two seal assemblies (19) and wear ring (21) from piston (20).4. Remove head (8) from piston rod (13).5. Remove O-ring seal (18) from head (8).6. Using Tool (A), remove retaining ring (1) from head (8).7. Remove retainer (3) and seal (9) from head (8).8. Remove rod wiper (16) from retainer (3).9. Remove bleeder screw (2) from head (8).10. Remove O-ring seal (4) from head (22).11. Using Tool (A), remove retaining ring (7) from head (22).12. Remove retainer (6) and seal (5) from head (22).13. Remove rod wiper (14) from retainer (6).14.
