Install bolts (8) . Tighten bolts (8) to a torque of 300 40 N m (221 30 lb ft).
Apply Prussian Blue, Red Lead, or paint to several teeth of the ring gear.

Attach a suitable lifting device to pinion housing (6) . The weight of pinion housing (6) is approximately 23 kg (50 lb). Install pinion housing (6) with the required number of shims that was determined in the first step. Install bolts (7) . Tighten bolts (7) to a torque of 300 40 N m (221 30 lb ft).

Use Tooling (K) in order to check the backlash. Measure the distance between the center of the yoke and the tip of the dial indicator of Tooling (K) . Record this value as Dimension (R) .
Check the backlash and record the indicator reading. Record this value.Note: All measurements must be in mm. Do not convert to inches.
Use the following formula in order to determine the actual backlash. Value (S) is a known constant of 0.02280 mm. The actual backlash should be between 0.17 mm and 0.35 mm.

Add or subtract shims (11) to achieve correct backlash.
After the backlash adjustment has been made, the tooth contact between the pinion shaft and the bevel gear must be checked. Use the following procedure:
Put a small amount of Prussian blue, red lead, or paint on three or four adjacent teeth of the bevel gear .
Rotate the pinion shaft for several revolutions in one direction. Then rotate the pinion shaft for several revolutions in the opposite direction. Then turn the pinion shaft in the original direction in order to observe the marked teeth.
The correct area of tooth contact begins near the inside end of the teeth. The contact area should extend to a maximum of 50 percent of the length of the teeth. Illustration 18 is an example of the correct area of tooth contact.Note: Backlash should be checked in three places on the ring gear.

If the tooth contact looks like the marks in Illustration 19, perform the following procedure:
Remove some of the shims that are behind the pinion housing.

If the tooth contact looks like the marks in Illustration 20, perform the following procedure:
Add shims behind the pinion housing.Note: Always make sure that the backlash adjustment is correct before an adjustment is made to the area of tooth contact. Several adjustments to the backlash and to the tooth contact may be necessary in order to achieve the correct adjustments. A change to gear backlash will also change the gear contact and a change to gear contact will change gear backlash.
After the adjustments are made, remove any dyes or paint from the gears.
