System Operation Description:Use this procedure to troubleshoot the electrical system if a problem is suspected with the prelubrication system or if one of the diagnostic codes or the event code in Table 1 is active or easily repeated. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Event Codes" for information about event codes and the default trip points for these codes. You must access the engine monitoring system on Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) in order to view the current trip points for these codes.
Table 1
Diagnostic Codes Table
Code    Conditions which Generate this Code    System Response
E098(1) Engine Prelube Override     The prelube override switch has been activated. The engine has started without completing the engine prelubrication.     The code is logged.
338-5 Engine Pre-Lube Pump Relay : Current Below Normal     The engine's Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects an open circuit at the prelube pump relay.
The ECM detects a short to battery voltage at the prelube pump relay.
338-6 Engine Pre-Lube Pump Relay : Current Above Normal     The ECM detects a short circuit at the prelube pump relay.    The ECM has the ability to automatically lubricate the engine before cranking. This may increase the life of certain engine parts by lubricating the parts before the starting motor is engaged. The prelubrication system is activated when the Engine Control Switch (ECS) is turned to the START position. The ECM prevents the starting motor from engaging until the prelube pump builds pressure in the engine oil system. After a short period of time, the starting motor is allowed to engage. The ECS must be left in the START position for the duration of the prelube cycle in order to ensure that the engine is properly lubricated before start-up.The engine will start without proper lubrication. If the prelube override switch is turned to the ON position the prelube cycle will be bypassed. In order to record the instances of improper lubrication, the event code E098 is generated whenever the prelubrication system is bypassed.A test on Cat ET allows the technician to activate the prelube system. The test is functional only when the engine speed is zero rpm. The test is accessed by selecting the following menus on Cat ET:

Location of ECM connectorsTest Step 1. Inspect the Electrical Connectors and the Wiring
Turn the main disconnect switch to the OFF position.
Thoroughly inspect the ECM connectors J1/P1 and J2/P2. Inspect all of the other connectors in the circuit for the prelube system. Refer to Troubleshooting, "Electrical Connectors - Inspect" for details.
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the wires in the ECM connector that are associated with the circuit.
Check the ECM connector
