Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the grapple. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Grapple - Remove" in this manual.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contamination of the hydraulic system with foreign material will reduce the service life of the hydraulic system components.To prevent contaminants from entering the hydraulic system, always plug or cap the lines, fittings, or hoses as they are disconnected. Cover any disassembled components and clean them properly before assembly.Clean the hydraulic system properly after any major component exchange or especially after a component failure, to remove any contamination.

Start the engine.
Fully extend the stick cylinder rod.
Lower the boom until the heel is flat on the ground, as shown.
Release the hydraulic system pressure. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Hydraulic System Pressure - Release" in this manual.

Disconnect hose (1) at heel cylinder (2), as shown.
Tie hose (1) away from heel cylinder (2) .

Disconnect hose (4) from the head end of heel cylinder (2), as shown.
Tie hose (4) away from cylinder (2) .
Remove pin retaining bolt (5) and the washers from pin (6), as shown.

Note: Use a lift truck to support the heel cylinder during removal of the pins, as shown. Move the heel cylinder upward or move the heel cylinder downward in order to relieve any pressure on the pins for the heel.
Use a hammer and a punch to remove pin (6) and the spacer from the stick and heel cylinder.
Remove the shims from the connection point between the heel cylinder and the stick, if equipped.

Note: To facilitate removal of the pin for the heel cylinder without causing damage to the pin, bearing and/or seals, use the lift truck to lower the heel cylinder to a horizontal position. Place a jack stand beneath the heel cylinder for stability during the pin removal. Secure the heel cylinder to the lift truck.
Remove pin retaining bolt (7) and the washers from the pin, as shown.
Use a hammer and a punch to remove the spacer and the pin from the heel and the heel cylinder.
Remove the cylinder from the heel and the stick. The weight of the heel cylinder is approximately 208 kg (458 lb).
Remove the shims between the heel cylinder and the heel, if equipped.
