A new commissioning strainer is recommended on certain C32 Marine engine installed with a 297-3168 Auxiliary Sea Water Pump Gp. This new 436-6468 Screen As is recommended to capture the vessel piping debris that has been found to cause early hour auxiliary pump shaft failures. The new strainer should be installed before the initial vessel sea trial and removed after the trial is complete on both keel cooled and on engine heat exchanger applications.Vessel piping debris has been known to cause failures early shaft failures, premature impeller wear, oil seal leaks, and water seal leaks on the 297-3168 Auxiliary Sea Water Pump Gp. Flush the vessel auxiliary water circuit to remove the system debris prior to engine installation. Refer to Special Instruction, REHS5008, "Proper Maintenance of the Cooling Systems of Certain Commercial ACERT C32 Marine Engines", for the recommended commissioning procedure. In Keel Cooled applications water quality must be maintained. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU6251, "Caterpillar Commercial Diesel Engine Fluids Recommendations" for guidelines".Use of the new commissioning strainer is adaptable back to the first production of the above listed engines.Installation Procedure

(1) 3N-8468 Clamp As
Drain auxiliary circuit and remove the 3N-8468 Clamp As (1) from the 297-3168 Auxiliary Sea Water Pump Gp. Refer to Illustration 1.

(2) 436-6468 Screen As (3) 8B-6283 Gasket
Remove the inlet pipe and install the 436-6468 Screen As (2) with two 8B-6283 Gaskets (3) as shown in Illustration 2.

(4) Bolts
Reinstall the auxiliary pump inlet tube. Tighten the clamp assembly bolts (4) evenly. The final torque on the bolts is 10 N m (7 lb ft).
Ensure that all other pump connections are made to the vessel piping.
Fill the auxiliary circuit and conduct the commissioning sea trial.
After the commissioning sea trial has been completed remove the strainer.Note: Failure to remove the strainer can lead to future pump cavitation.
