The return accumulator maintains a certain amount of back pressure in the system. Maintaining back pressure reduces the occurrence of pressure spikes in the return circuit.

During some operations, the return circuit requires back pressure to prevent a pressure spike. In the accumulator, gas chamber (8) is surrounded by bladder (9). The gas chamber is filled with nitrogen gas. The accumulator is connected to the return circuit through port (10).
