Caterpillar vehicles originally equipped with Fire Resistant Hydraulic Fluid Systems (water-glycol) are equipped with a Fluid Temperature Indicator and a Temperature Actuated Horn. These warning devices provide audible and visible warnings to the operator whenever the hydraulic fluid temperature is above, or below, the safe operating range of +10°F (12.2°C) to +190°F (87.7°C). The warning horn can be shut off only by operating the engine at low idle until the fluid temperature is within the operating range. Operation or storage below +10°F (12.2°C) will permit freezing.
Do not remove the hydraulic system filler cap when the system temperature is above 190°F [87.7°C], as the water in the fluid will escape under pressure as steam.
Before Starting
Fire Resistant Hydraulic Systems (water-glycol) should be checked and fluid added (as necessary) at the beginning of each shift when fluid is cool, and never at the end of the shift. This will prevent tank vacuum from occurring. Starting the machine with vacuum in the tank will cause pump cavitation.
Before Operating
With all controls in neutral, start the engine and operate at half throttle for 10 to 15 minutes, to allow fluid to warm up.
