1. Make sure O-ring seal (2) is in position. Put clean SAE 30 oil on the O-ring seal. Install brake and wheel spindle housing (1). Install the nuts that hold it in place. The weight of the brake and wheel spindle housing is approximately 725 lb. (329 kg). 2. START BY:a) remove brake and wheel spindle housing 1. Remove the three bolts and retainer (1). Remove the shims that are under the retainer. It will be necessary to remove the wire from the three bolts on earlier models. 2. Use three straps and a hoist as shown to remove sprocket (2). The weight of the sprocket is approximately 82 lb. (37 kg). 3. Remove bearing cone (3). Remove plate (4) and the three other bolts that hold cover (5) to the housing. 4. Install tooling (A). Remove cover (5). The weight of the cover is approximately 120 lb. (54 kg).5. Remove the O-ring seal from the cover. 6. Use tooling (B) to remove bearing cup (6). 7. Remove hub (7) and O-ring seal (8). 8. Remove ten discs (9) and nine disc assemblies (10). 9. Install tooling (C) and remove housing (11). The weight of the housing is approximately 212 lb. (96 kg).
Spring (13) is under compression. To prevent personal injury, hold bolt (12) until all the compression of spring (13) is released.
10. Remove bolts (12), the washers and springs (13).
Earlier Model Shown11. On earlier models, put the springs in compression with tool (D). Remove the rings from the retainers (14). Remove washers (16) and springs (15) from the retainers. 12. Remove piston (17) from the housing. 13. Remove two O-ring seals (18) from the piston. 14. Turn the housing over and remove Duo-Cone seal (19). 15. Use tooling (B) to remove bearing cup (20) from housing (11). 16. Remove Duo-Cone seal (21) from the spindle. 17. Use tooling (E) to remove bearing cone (23) from spindle (22). Remove the spacer under bearing cone (23).Assemble Brake And Wheel Spindle Housing
1. Install the spacer on the spindle with large flat surface up.2. Heat bearing cone (1) to a temperature of 275°F (135°C) for one hour. Install the bearing cone on the spindle as shown. The bearing cone must be against the spacer.3. After the bearing cone has become cool, use a hammer and a brass punch to hit the inner race of the bearing cone to make sure it is against the spacer. Rubber toric rings and all surfaces that come in contact with them must be clean and dry at assembly. Make an application of a thin film of oil to the contacting surfaces of the metal seals just prior to assembly.4. Use tool (A) to install the Duo-Cone Seal. 5. Lower the temperature of the bearing cup. Install the bearing cup in housing (2). Use tool (B) to make sure the bearing cup is against its seat. 6. Install
