Dear Caterpillar Product Owner:The transmission's number 4 clutch used in6th and 7th range in the products listed below may fail. New software andcomponents for the transmission hydraulic control need to be installed.Some symptoms are that there may be a noticeable shift hesitation into6th or 7th or inability of the truck to maintain speed in 6th or 7th whenthe clutch starts to slip.Contact your local Caterpillar dealer immediatelyto schedule this service. The dealer will advise you of the time requiredto complete this service. Please refer the dealer to their Service Letterdated February 1, 2002 when scheduling this service. REWORK PROCEDURE
NOTE Step 1-14 are for Group 1 Affected Product.
1. Position a suitable container under the transmissioncase in order to contain the oil for storage or for disposal.

2. Remove four bolts (2) and remove the washers.Remove guard (1) .

3. Label the wire harness for installationpurposes. Disconnect the wire harness at two electrical connections (4).Remove the washer and the bolt that holds clip (3) to the transmissioncase. Remove the clip.

4. Mark the location of two clips (5) andthe bolts for installation purposes. Remove the two washers and the twobolts that hold clips (5) in place. Remove the clips and remove 21 bolts(6).5. Remove cover (7) and the gasket in orderto access the control group.6. On "G" station, remove 6Y8048 spool assemblyand replace it with a 215-9630 spool assembly. Primary and maximum clutchpressure settings do not change. Refer to step 8 when checking pressures.
7. On "A" station, remove and replace the9W7411 spring with one 9W7410 and one 7G5453 spring (springs are nestedone inside the other). Remove and replace the 3T1437 piston with one 6T2293piston. Remove and replace the 9P0656 spool assembly with one 215-9630spool assembly. Add shims to increase primary pressure to 517 +48/-34 kPA(75 +7/-5 PSI). Maximum pressure will remain the same 1426 +241/-103 kPa(207 +35/-15 PSI). Refer to step 8 when checking pressures.
8. Follow procedure RENR3320, TransmissionHydraulic Control Primary Pressure-Test and Adjust, to check and resetprimary pressure on control stations A and G.

9. Position the gasket (not shown) and positioncover (7) on the transmission case. Install 21 bolts (6).
