Remove the fan. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fan - Remove and Install".
Remove the front cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Cover - Remove".

Rotate the crankshaft until the timing marks on the crankshaft gear, the camshaft gear, and the fuel injection pump gear are aligned, as shown.
Remove bolt (3) and washer (2) from the camshaft gear (1).
Install Tooling (A) and remove camshaft gear (1). Note: Do not lose the key from the camshaft gear.
Inspect the camshaft gear for wear and damage. Replace the gear, if necessary. Installation Procedure

Install camshaft gear (1) in the front housing. Note: When you install the camshaft gear, ensure that the teeth that have the timing marks are facing toward the front. Also, ensure that the key is aligned properly in the keyway. If necessary, tap the gear with a soft hammer in order to seat the key in the keyway.
If necessary, remove the camshaft gear in order to align the gear teeth correctly.
Install washer (2) and bolt (3) on the camshaft gear (1). Tighten the bolt to a torque of 95 N m (70 lb ft). Note: Ensure that the timing marks on the camshaft gear, the crankshaft gear, and the fuel injection pump gear are aligned.
Check the backlash between the camshaft gear and the idler gear. The backlash for the gears is 0.052 to 0.107 mm (0.0021 to 0.0042 inch). End By:
Install the front cover. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Front Cover - Install".
Install the fan. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Fan - Remove and Install".
