Engine Identification
Caterpillar engines are identified with serial numbers, with performance specification numbers, and with arrangement numbers. In some of the cases, modification numbers are used. These numbers are shown on the Serial Number Plate and the Information Plate that are mounted on the engine.Caterpillar dealers need these numbers in order to determine the components that were included with the engine. This permits accurate identification of replacement part numbers.Serial Number Plate
The Serial Number Plate is on the left side of the cylinder block near the rear of the engine.

(1) Engine serial number plate The following information is stamped on the Serial Number Plate: engine serial number, model and arrangement number.Information Plate
The Information Plate is on the front of the rear valve cover.

(2) Engine information plate The following information is stamped on the Information Plate: compression ratio, aftercooler temperature, power (kilowatts and horsepower), full load rpm and other information.Generator Identification
The generator identification and information plate is located on the barrel of the generator.

(4) Generator serial number plate When service is required, the information that is given on this plate should be used. The generator identification and information plate includes the following information: serial number, model number and the rating of the generator set. The generator set consists of the engine and a generator. All pertinent generator data is also included on the plate in order to provide the information that is necessary to order parts.
