Remove Idler Gears
1. Remove bolts and cover plate (1) from the compartment of the idler gears. 2. Remove two cage bolts and install two 3/8" - 16 NC guide bolts. Install three 3/8" - 16 NC forcing screws in cage. Remove remainder of bolts (2) and cage (3). Keep the shims with cage for use during installation. 3. Remove O-ring seal (4) from cage. 4. Remove bearing cup from cage with tooling (A). 5. Remove spiral retaining ring (5) that holds the idler gear to the gear assembly. 6. Pull gear assembly (6) part of the way out of the idler gear and fasten it to a hoist. Use one hand to keep idler gear in balance until gear assembly (6) is removed. Let the idler gear roll slowly to one side against the case. Weight of gear assembly is 34 kg (75 lb.). 7. Remove two plates (7) from gear. 8. Remove bearing cones (8) and (9) with tooling (B). 9. Fasten a hoist to the idler gear (10) and remove it from the case. Weight of gear is 27 kg (60 lb.). Steps 10 through 16 are for the removal of the idler gear bearing cup only.10. Remove drum shaft nut (11) with tooling (C). Remove washer. 11. Remove O-ring seal (12) from shaft.12. Remove two flange bolts and install two 3/8"-16 NC guide bolts in case assembly. Install three 3/8"-16 NC forcing screws and remove flange (13) from case. Keep the shims with the flange for use during installation. 13. Remove O-ring seal (14) from flange.14. Put a wood block between the drum drive gear and the case to make the drive gear so it will not turn. 15. Remove two bolts and install two 5/8"-11 NC guide pins through the drum drive gear and into the drum support flange. Remove the remainder of bolts (15) and ring (16). Move the drum drive gear (17) off the drum support spline to make clearance for gear assembly (6) bearing cup removal. 16. Remove bearing cup (18) from case assembly with tooling (D).Install Idler Gears
If bearings were removed, follow the procedure in Steps 1 through 13 for installation. 1. Lower the temperature of the bearing cups in dry ice. Install inner bearing cup (1) in case. 2. Put a pry bar (3) in position in the drive gear lower hole. Lift the drive gear enough to install two 5/8"-11 NC guide bolts in the drum support flange as shown. With the splines in alignment, push the drive gear on to the support flange splines. Make sure the outer bearing (2) is in the bearing cup. 3. Put 7M7260 Liquid Gasket Material on retainer (4) and drum assembly. Install retaining ring (4) on the idler gear. Put a block between the drum drive gear and the case so the gear will not turn. Install bolts and tighten to a torque of 235 20 N m (174 15 lb.ft.). If the drum shaft nut was removed to
