Cat® data-link circuitThe CID 0248 FMI 09 diagnostic code is used by the all wheel drive (AWD) ECM as a companion code. This companion code is activated simultaneously with a companion code of another ECM to indicate that the Cat® data-link has an abnormal condition.The FMI 09 will match the FMI 09 that is activated for the diagnostic code of the ECM. FMI 09 means that the AWD ECM has lost all communication with the other ECM.The CID 0248 FMI 09 diagnostic code will never be activated by the AWD ECM as a stand-alone diagnostic code. The AWD ECM will only activate the CID 0248 FMI 09 diagnostic code with one of the following Component Identifier (CID) codes:CID 0296 FMI 09 - Transmission/Chassis ECMCID 0590 FMI 09 - Engine ECMCID 1558 FMI 09 - Implement ECM 2For Example: The AWD ECM detects there is no communication from the Transmission/Chassis ECM over the Cat data-link. The AWD ECM activates CID 0296 FMI 09 and CID 0248 FMI 09.When CID 0248 FMI 09 is activated by the AWD ECM, look for one of the ECM diagnostic codes listed above to troubleshoot the problem.Perform the following procedure when the CID 0248 FMI 09 diagnostic code is activated. Verify that the CID 0248 FMI 09 diagnostic code is active before performing this procedure.Test Step 1. CHECK THE CAT® DATA-LINK CIRCUIT FOR AN OPEN
Turn off the keyswitch and the disconnect switch.
Disconnect the J1 harness connectors from the AWD ECM and the other companion code ECM.
Inspect and clean the Cat data-link harness connectors. See the illustration above for the Cat data-link harness connectors. Inspect the contacts for the following:
Wires are secure
Contacts are clean
Contacts are in good condition
At the disconnected J1 Transmission/Chassis ECM harness connector, connect a jumper wire between contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN) and contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR).
At the disconnected AWD ECM J1 harness connector, measure the resistance between contact J1-10 (wire 893-GN) and contact J1-20 (wire 892-BR).Expected Result:The resistance is less than 5 ohms.Results:
OK - The resistance is less than 5 ohms. Proceed to Test Step 2.
NOT OK - The resistance is greater than 5 ohms. There is an open or a bad connection in the Cat data-link harness circuit.Repair: A resistance greater than 5 ohms but less than 5000 ohms indicates one wire or connection point is not open, but the connection is poor.See the machine Electrical Schematic. Locate and examine all the data-link circuit harness connections. Check each wire section from connector to connector for an open or a bad connection. Inspect the connections for the following:
Cleanliness
Security
Condition.Repair or replace the harness.STOPTest Step 2. CHECK THE STATUS OF THE DIAGNOSTIC CODE
Perform a 45 N (10 lb) pull test on each of the data-link circuit wires.
Reconnect all connectors. Verify the following:
Connectors are fully seated
Connector clips are fastened
Turn on the disconnect switch and the keyswitch.
Operate the machine.
Check the status of the FMI 09 diagnostic code of the ECM that has the diagnostic code.Expected Result:FMI 09 of the ECM that has the diagnostic code
