General Procedures For Replacing Hydraulic Cylinders
The following practices should be followed when replacing hydraulic cylinders. See page 3.0-4 for procedures for replacing elevation cylinders.1. Reduce the hydraulic pressure to zero by moving the control lever for the cylinder back and forth until the cylinder will no longer move.
ASSEMBLIES SUPPORTED BY CYLINDERS WILL DROP WHEN THE CYLINDERS ARE REMOVED AND COULD CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY. ALWAYS BLOCK UP ASSEMBLIES.
2. Detach the hoses from the hydraulic cylinder at the port fittings. Immediately cap or plug the lines and ports.3. Support the cylinder, remove the clevis pins, then remove the cylinder.4. Install the port fittings on the new cylinder, fill the cylinder with clean ATF Type F hydraulic oil through both ports of the cylinder, and cap or plug the fittings.5. Position the cylinder and secure the head end.
ACTIVATING A DISCONNECTED CYLINDER WHICH IS ONE OF A SET OPERATED BY A SINGLE CONTROL WILL CAUSE UNEXPECTED MACHINE MOVEMENT AND POSSIBLE PERSONAL INJURY. DISCONNECT ALL CYLINDER RODS OF THE SET AND POSITION THE RODS SO THEY CAN BE EXTENDED WITHOUT INTERFERENCE WHEN PURGING AIR FROM THE LINES.
6. Connect the hydraulic lines to the cylinder. With pressure on the system, operate the cylinder through a complete range of travel at least three times to purge air from the lines.
IF POSSIBLE, INSTALL CYLINDER PINS WITH THE FLAT HEAD ON TOP OF THE CLEVIS SO THE PIN WILL NOT FALL OUT IF THE KEEPER COMES OUT OF THE PIN.
7. Connect the rod to its mounting point.8. Check the cylinder and lines for leakage.9. Mark the rod and then apply pressure to the system for five minutes to check for piston rod "creep". If the rod creeps, check for leakage at the piston seals.Removing And Installing Elevation Cylinders
Since the elevation cylinders are located inside the leg barrels, exposure to the operational environment is negligible and replacement of a cylinder will seldom be necessary. If it does become necessary to replace a cylinder:1. Position the machine on a level surface and lower the machine to the limit of all three legs.
UNEXPECTED MOVEMENT OF AN ELEVATION CYLINDER WHILE REMOVING IT CAN CAUSE AN INJURY. SHUT ENGINE B (CATERPILLAR 3208) DOWN, TAG THE ENGINE CONTROL AND SET THE MAIN BATTERY SWITCH AT "OFF" BEFORE REMOVING
2. Remove the cotter pin and slotted nut from the bottom center of the leg yoke.3. If the front cylinder is being removed, unbolt the seat and move it away. 4. Mark the cylinder hoses at the fittings near the locking valves for identification during reassembly, then disconnect the hoses. Cap or plug all openings immediately.5. Unbolt the locking valve or valves from the brackets, then lay the valves and attached hoses aside.6. Remove the bolts from the leg cap.7. Attach a lifting device to the lifting lug on the leg cap and pull the leg cap and cylinder STRAIGHT UP out of the leg.8. Mark the hoses for identification during reassembly, then disconnect the hoses and immediately cap or plug all openings.9. To install
