Note: These coolant change intervals are only achievable with annual S O S Services Level 2 coolant sampling and analysis.Distilled water or deionized water is recommended for use in engine cooling systems. If distilled water or deionized water is not available, use water that meets or exceeds the properties that are listed in 5.

Glycol in the coolant helps to provide protection against the following conditions:
Boiling
Freezing
Cavitation of the water pump and cylinder linersFor optimum performance, Caterpillar recommends a 1:1 mixture of a water/glycol solution.Note: Use a mixture that will provide protection against the lowest ambient temperature.Note: 100 percent pure glycol will freeze at a temperature of −23 °C (−9 °F).Most conventional heavy-duty coolants use ethylene glycol. Propylene glycol may also be used. In a 1:1 mixture with water, ethylene and propylene glycol provide similar protection against freezing and boiling.Refer to Tables 6 and 7 for additional information.

( 1 ) Protection from boiling is increased with the use of a pressurized radiator.
Do not use propylene glycol in concentrations that exceed 50 percent glycol because of propylene glycol's reduced heat transfer capability. Use ethylene glycol in conditions that require additional protection against boiling or freezing.

The testers can be used with ethylene or propylene glycol.Note: Propylene glycol coolant that is used in Caterpillar Diesel Engine cooling systems must meet "ASTM D6210-04 "Fully-Formulated Propylene Glycol-Based Engine Coolant for Heavy-Duty Engines" standards. When Propylene glycol is used in heavy-duty diesel engines, Supplemental Coolant Additive (SCA) must be added regularly for protection for the liner cavitation. Consult your Caterpillar dealer for more information.S O S Services Coolant Analysis
