Conditions Which Generate This Code:The Electronic Control Module (ECM) detects the following conditions:E197-1
The engine has been running for at least three minutes.
The ECM detects a high engine oil temperature for ten seconds.
The engine oil temperature is above the trip point.E197-2
The engine has been running for at least three minutes.
The ECM detects a high engine oil temperature for ten seconds.
The engine oil temperature is above the trip point.E197-3
The engine has been running for at least three minutes.
The ECM detects a high engine oil temperature for ten seconds.
The engine oil temperature is above the trip point.System Response:E197-1The ECM will trigger a snapshot. The event code is logged.E197-1The ECM will trigger a snapshot. The event code is logged. An engine derate will occur.E197-3The ECM will trigger a snapshot. The event code is logged. The engine will shut down.E197-1
Engine performance is not affected.E197-2
An engine derate will be initiated.E197-3
The engine will shut down.A high engine oil temperature may be caused by the following problems:
Improper engine oil level
Faulty engine oil cooler bypass valve
Damaged engine oil cooler core
Problems with other engine systemsTest Step 1. Check the Level of the Engine OilUse the engine oil dipstick to check for the correct oil level. If necessary, add engine oil to the crankcase. Results:Continue to the next test step.Test Step 2. Inspect the Engine Oil Cooler Bypass ValveInspect the components of the engine oil cooler bypass valve for damage. Clean the engine oil cooler bypass valve and clean the bore for the valve. Ensure that the bypass valve is not stuck in the open position. Replace the components of the bypass valve, if necessary. Results:Continue to the next test step.Test Step 3. Inspect the Engine Oil Cooler CoreCheck the engine oil cooler core for damage and for plugging. Clean the engine oil cooler core or replace the engine oil cooler core, if necessary. Results:Continue to the next test step.Test Step 4. Check for a Problem with Other Engine Systems
Verify that the cooling system is filled to the proper level. If the coolant level is too low, air will get into the cooling system. Air in the cooling system will cause a reduction in coolant flow.
Check the radiator or the heat exchanger for a restriction to coolant flow.
Check for debris or damage between the fins of the radiator core. Debris between the fins of the radiator core restricts air flow through the radiator core.
Check internally for debris, dirt, or deposits on the radiator core. Debris, dirt, or deposits will restrict the flow of coolant through the radiator.
Check the water temperature regulator. A water temperature regulator that does not open, or a water temperature regulator that only opens part of the way can cause overheating.
Check the water pump. A water pump with a damaged impeller does not pump enough coolant. Remove the water pump and check for damage to the impeller.
If the cooling system for this application is equipped with a fan, check the operation of the fan. A fan that is not turning at the correct speed can cause improper air speed
