Removal Procedure
Start By:
Remove the water manifold segments for the cylinder heads that will be serviced. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Water Lines - Remove and Install".
Disconnect the bellows from the exhaust manifold segments for the cylinder heads that will be serviced. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Exhaust Manifold - Remove and Install".
Remove the engine lifting bracket, if necessary. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Engine Lifting Bracket - Remove and Install".
Remove the rocker shaft and pushrods for the cylinder heads that will be serviced. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Rocker Shaft and Pushrod - Remove".

( 1 ) Either pump may be used for this procedure.
( 2 ) The 4C-9515 Overhaul Protection Kit provides all the protective covers and plugs for one cylinder. Use these protective covers in order to maximize the protection during these procedures.
Keep all parts clean from contaminants.Contaminants may cause rapid wear and shortened component life.
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Drain the coolant from the cooling system to a level that is below the cylinder heads into a suitable container for storage or disposal. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, "Cooling System Coolant - Change".

Disconnect rod (1) from lever (2) .

Remove tube assembly (3) .

Remove bolts (4) and the washers. Push tube (5) and flange (6) toward the lower housing of the aftercooler. Allow sufficient clearance between flange (6) and the cylinder head for removal of the cylinder head.
Use the proper procedure in order to apply tension to the cylinder head studs. Failure to follow the correct procedure will result in damage to the cylinder head assembly and the cylinder block assembly.
