Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers before opening any compartment or disassembling any component containing fluids.Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Tools and Shop Products Guide" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain fluids on Caterpillar products.Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.
Note: Verify that all of the components of the axle shaft are clean and free of foreign material prior to installation.Note: Check all of the components and all of the O-ring seals for wear or for damage. Replace the components, if necessary. Lubricate the O-ring seals lightly with the lubricant that is being sealed.

If the machine is equipped with the traction control system, install clamp (11) to axle shaft (7) .

Attach a suitable lifting sling around axle shaft (7). Secure the suitable lifting sling to a hoist. Install axle shaft (7) to the final drive. The weight of the axle shaft is 77 kg (170 lb). Remove the tooling from the axle shaft.

Attach Tool (B) to the end of axle shaft (7), as shown. Use Tool (B) to rotate axle shaft (7) until the splines of axle shaft (7) are engaged with the splines of the differential.

Install spacer (8) and thrust washer (9) to the axle shaft.

Install gear (6) to the axle shaft. The splines of gear (6) should engage with the splines of the axle shaft. The teeth of gear (6) should engage with the teeth of the planetary carrier. Remove Tool (B) from the axle shaft.

Use Tool (C) to install retaining ring (10) to axle shaft (7) .

Install O-ring seal (5) to cover (2). Install plate (4) and the spacer to cover (2). Install four bolts that secure plate (4) and the spacer to cover (2).

Attach Tool (A) to cover (2). Secure Tool (A) to a hoist. Install cover (2) to the final drive. The weight of the cover is 34 kg (75 lb). Install nine bolts (1) and the washers that secure cover (2) to the final drive. Remove the tooling from the cover.
Install drain plug (3) to cover (2) .
Fill the final drive. Refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7261, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities". For the High Altitude Arrangement Off-Highway Truck, refer to Operation and Maintenance Manual, SEBU7268, "Lubricant Viscosities and Refill Capacities".
Repeat the procedure for the remaining axle shaft.End By: Remove the wheel chocks. Refer to Disassembly and Assembly, "Wheel Chock (Front and Rear) - Remove and Install".
